MMU DEGREE SHOW - SOPHIE HO

This knitwear designer really caught my eye
I have always had a very narrowed opinion of knitwear because I have felt it can look a little dated. However, this designers collection made me completely rethink my opinion. She was inspired by architectural designs and her own photography. She wanted to combine nature and man made structures.
Sophie used plastics to reflect light and cleverly made the threads look like structures. The garments look robotic and as through they would restrict your movement but on closer inspection they are very delicate and light.

Asking other people what they thought of her work I found there was a mixed understanding of her inspiration. Some felt that the garments were inspired by goth, dominatrix and leather, which was seen frequently at London Fashion Week. I felt that the pieces looked very delicate and feminine.
The advice I was given at London Textile Fair was to make sure my work was on trend, looking at the runways of London Fashion Week, Sophie has been able to combine the trends of A/W 12/13 to a T! by using very rigid elements, such as the plastic and mixed them with the manipulated threads.

I think I remembered her work because I feel like it tricked me, the variety of opinions of it interest me as well. I like the idea that the garment represents very contrasting views for each person. This could be something to look into a lot more detail in my own work, whether it is through drawing or playing with collage. To achieve this I need to practice my illustrations, here I will be able to play with what people see but through very small detail.
